The European regulation that requires the registration of all tourist-use homes in the Single Lease Registry becomes effective in Spain today.
The measure is aimed at increasing transparency and controlling the uncontrolled proliferation of these types of homes.
The huge growth of unregistered tourist rentals represents unfair competition for hotel chains and distorts the rental market.
Despite the regulation is in effect since January, until yesterday, 45.7% of tourist homes had not yet registered.
Just in Madrid, there are more than 15,000 illegal tourist rental homes, compared to the 1,131 licenses officially granted.
Conclusion: The implementation of this register by the Ministry of Housing could mark an important turning point, but it will require collaboration between different administrations and a real political will to correct the current situation.
